The monks on the Holy Mount--Mt. Athos in Greece--are called Hagiorites or Athonites. These monasteries and St. Catherine's Monastery on Mt. Sinai have been the formative grounds for Orthodox theology, piety, and iconography. There are many monasteries--and many coenobitic monks and hermits--on the Holy Mountain. Many nationalities are represented. Click the following to view excellent photographs; but you should begin with the first item. Note that at the bottom of the GREAT LAVRA site--and their fellow sites--you can click on pictures of many other Athonite monasteries. You can spend some hours viewing the whole set.
